Żadnej bylejakości – o twórczości Bogdana Chmielewskiego

Abstract


In the essay No Indifference the author approaches the character of Bogdan Chmielewski, the artist from Bydgoszcz. He refers to the comments of Jacek Sempoliński, Marek Kazimierz Siwiec and the art critic Hanna Strychalska.

The author focuses on the creative pathway embarked upon by the artist already in the 70’s of 20th century. He shows how this art has been changing for over 40 years. He points out that Chmielewski makes use of ordinary objects for the sake of his art, such as: a scythe, bundle, suitcases, planks; setting them, however, in the cosmic space.

The author shows also how important the pathway motive is for the artist. For it is pivotal for the narrative about man and his life. Indeed, the author remarks that the pathway is but searching one’s own room for life and death. He says that it is precisely the pathway whereupon the lost understanding is about to be recovered. In the installation Pas słucki (A girdle made in Słuck), the pathway metaphor is a journey into the future too; it shows the tragic lot of the people expelled from their abodes; ousted from their homesteads. It is also a tale about the death lurking like a scythe for a man.

The author expresses the view that the artistic achievements of Chmielewski relating to the wandering, exile and time bear the witness to our past, and, at the same time, to the modern man condition, being in fact a metaphorical narrative about human lot.
