My Recollection of Father Joseph M. Bocheński

Abstract

My memories of Father Joseph M. Bocheński, the great Pole, philosopher, logician and Dominican, mostly concern the last three years of his life spent in a Dominican priory in Fribourg, Switzerland. The daily life of Father Bocheński was filled with prayer and intellectual activity, which mostly revolved around the problem of faith. According to the author of Logic of Religion, the acceptance of faith demands a transitional phase of assuming the so-called religious hypothesis, which helps to deem sentences with faith content to be true. In such understanding of religious hypothesis it is a notion equivalent to scientific hypothesis. At the very end of his life Father Bocheński assumed a new divide into two contrasting notions which are basic faith and system. The basic faith comprises a few sentences similar to the ones expressed in the prayer Our Father and constitutes a parallel term to Dilthey’s notion of world view. A system is a complex set of theses present in every major religion. Therefore, a converting person acknowledges at first the basic faith, which answers the most important questions regarding the existence of God and His providence, and then all the remaining truths of faith that compose the system of the religion he believes in.

Keywords: Fr. Joseph M. Bocheński, Fribourg, faith, religion, to believe, logic, existence of God.
