To Live in a Basement with a Lamp. A Tale of the Sources of Franz Kafka’s Creative Style

Abstract

The essay is an attempt to identify the existential and metaphysical sources of Franz Kafka's creative style. The starting point of the consideration is Kafka's flawed romance and two broken betrothals with Felicia Bauer. His life adventures and choices are shown as the choices of not just the life's path but also, and above all, the choice of his artistic path. Franz Kafka is pictured here as a creator in a conflict between his social obligations and the necessity of solitude, an integral part of pursuing a literary vocation.
According to the author, Kafka wants to live a life of a bourgeois, and at the same time he does not. The result of this attitude is a conviction that he cannot himself properly fulfil either the role of the writer or the father of a family and a man in a bourgeois society. The author of the essay sees this situation of tensions as the source of life and artistic problems of the writer, as well as the reason why Kafka chose to lead and create “realistic myths.” Kafka's myths show the reality by having every day and even common events placed in the context of ultimate questions.

Keywords: Franz Kafka, creativity, narration, myths, commonness.
