Creative Act as a Meta-Historical One – Nicolas Berdyaev’s Concept

Abstract

The article constitutes an attempt to analyse the interrelation between two central categories of Berdyaev’s philosophy – creative act and meta-history. The title concept of creative act as meta-historical is suggested to be the answer to Berdyaev’s questions on the meaning of history. According to Berdyaev himself, these questions are tantamount to the questions on the meaning of human existence embedded in history. The first part of the article reconstructs Berdyaev’s reasoning that claims that the creative act is – from the existential perspective – an optimal way of making history meaningful. Crucial to this reasoning are such concepts as the end of history, existential time, eternity, and freedom. The second part of the article focuses on meta-historical features of the creative act. At the end of the article two issues are raised. The first one refers to the role of Christian symbols in Berdyaev’s concept of creative act as meta-historical one. The other issue concerns the possibility of confronting this concept with modern hermeneutics represented by Gadamer and Ricoeur.

Keywords: Berdyaev, creative act, meta-history, meaning of history, end of history, existential time, freedom, eternity.
