On the Fundamental Similarity of Thought Between Karl Jaspers and Josef Pieper

Abstract

This article is an attempt to demonstrate a conceptual relationship between two modern German philosophers – Karl Jaspers, the most eminent, next to Martin Heidegger, representative of existentialism, and one of the most significant 20th-century representatives of the so-called wisdom conception of philosophy and a great interpreter of the doctrine of St. Thomas Aquinas, Josef Pieper. It also allows to see and learn how current and important their message is today. First, we learn the general approach to this issue. Obviously, a deeper and better defined insight into it is made possible by detailed analyses. They provide more detailed information on the questions they have in common. It is necessary to list at least six, namely: the question of person, spiritual impoverishment, modern sophistry, the view of philosophizing, fundamental ideas of university (philosophy and theology), philosophical faith.
The article also presents three threads which make the sketched issues complete and, at the same time, allows to penetrate deeper into the conditions of the mental orientation of two philosophers. These are: the similarities on the academic plane, personal relations of both philosophers, mutual interest in each other’s works.

Keywords: Karl Jaspers, Josef Pieper, philosophy, present day, faith.
