The Problem of Individuation in Antonius Andreae

Abstract

The problem of individuation, a specifically medieval philosophical issue, was discussed by many authors. Antonius Andreae, a Catalan disciple of Duns Scotus and one of the main figures in early Scotism, analysed it in two of his works: De tribus principiis naturae and the commentary on Metaphysics, which long functioned as handbooks of Scotist philosophy. In both works, he presents a consistently Scotist doctrine, based mostly on the material taken from Scotus’ Ordinatio and questions to Metaphysics. Antonius’ lucid explanations of his master’s notoriously complicated ideas and attempts at introducing consistency in terminology allow us to understand not only the Scotistic concept of individuation but also his popularity as a teacher of Scotism.
