The Classical Concept of Freedom – the Viewpoint of Robert Spaemann
Abstract
The article discusses the question of human freedom, which has been drawing the attention of modern and contemporary thinkers. We learn about the concept of a distinguished contemporary German philosopher Robert Spaemann, albeit narrowed to several important issues. First, we discover that, contrary to what is claimed by the proponents of present-day materialistic determinism, that is neurophilosophers and brain scholars, the freedom of will is a fact supported by, among others, our elementary internal experience, ability to grasp the meaning of an utterance, to state moral opinions, and the capability to reflect on the determinants of free action. Next, the understanding of freedom is explained, kinds of freedom, the most important risks associated with it, and both the Christian and Stoic positions are shortly characterized. What is also stressed is the extent to which free choices reveal and define our personality. Finally, the existence of an internal and direct connection between the clasically perceived freedom and the issue of safety is demonstrated.
