Is Foucault a Lacanist and Lacan a poststructuralist?

Abstract

The aim of the article is to compare several passages of works of two French thinkers whose views, in my opinion, show some interesting coincidences concerning the concept of freedom (Foucault) and ethics of the Real (Lacan). It is quite astonishing because Michel Foucault, although he was constantly calling for “doing justice to Freud,” seemingly became later an enemy of psychoanalysis and he took a critical attitude towards psychoanalysis in History of sexuality. Nevertheless, it seems that the concept of freedom by Foucault and the ethics of the Real have a very important point in common: to unmask the imaginary orders, to go through the phantasm (“ideology,” discourse), to confront with the power of the drive. This strategy lies in the fact that the subject who knows should simply change itself into the subject who does not know and finally into the subject as an empty space.

Keywords: Foucault, Lacan, the Real, freedom, ethics.
