O nadziei, jakÄ… daje filozofia

Abstract

On the Hope Given by Philosophy

The paper defends the thesis that Western philosophy must be interpreted as something that has arisen by dint of divine intervention in human history. As a purely theoretical investigation, aimed at truth and independent of all kinds of authority, philosophy is unique in the history of humanity and for that matter – together with sciences – must be seen as the decisive factor that made the rise of Western culture possible. The philosophy in this sense occasioned the ‘synthesis’ of Jerusalem, Athens, and Rome and thus led to the emergence of Christianity. The uniqueness of all these events gives grounds for the hope that human history will, perhaps in the near future, end up as it was envisaged by Christian faith.

Keywords: philosophy of history, Christianity, culture, idea of philosophy, faith.
