Koncepcja bezpieczeństwa Hansa Eduarda Hengstenberga: między doczesnością a wiecznością

Józef Kożuchowski

Human Safety: between Worldliness and Eternity. The Actuality and Importance of Hans Eduard Hengstenberg`s Approach.

The author of the article presents an originally an interestingly shaped philosophical-and-theological thought of the contemporary German thinker - Hans Eduard Hengstenberg. First, the article points out some false means of achieving safety regarding them from the vantage point of theology and the individual psychology; means that appeared – as has been mentioned in the article – inter alia in politics and apparently went bust. The paper underscores and explains fully the fact that the safety problem was being analyzed by this outstanding philosopher in the setting of how the aim of human life (traditionally conceived as the motive of his actions) was realized. At heart, Hengstenberg`s thought adds up to that there is the divine safety, whereas the human one does not exist. That means that a safe existence cannot be built with purely natural means, it having its ultimate source but in God. Nevertheless, while being created, the safe existence ought to be enhanced by the appropriately conceived human activity, i.e. the promptitude to accomplish the tasks delegated to men by God. Due to this activity, a person deserves to be awarded with the safe existence in their worldly existence, but also to have it enhanced by God at a higher level in the future one. The promptitude in question reveals a person`s trust in Providence as testified in the labor of cherishing the commands, laws and objectives of God. The same promptitude makes men decipher their life as a vocation for being supportive of the others. This activity appears in their humbleness, as it implies their having acknowledged their being not-self-reliant and restricted as well as their being engaged in what is objectively worthy and in accordance with God`s will, not to mention their denial of pride making them resort to some false safety.
The author points out the actuality and importance of the German philosopher`s thought in the setting of contemporary challenges arising from the growing awareness of threats and the nagging want of safety. The author also enhances the problem of the aim of human existence, serving as the foundation for Hengstenberg`s analyses on the safety. Hengstenberg himself has not directly addressed the problem.
